Summer Weather

A sunny August afternoon
goes without saying.
But hail reminds us that we
wear skullcaps
thin and brittle as glass.
Straight-line winds
humble sinners and trees
to their knees.
A sudden downpour raises
umbrellas and
the shiver of goosebumps.
Lightning crackles,
and alarmed, one’s hackles
stand attentive.
Every thunderhead hurries
the day’s saunter.
Yet I prefer the pleasures
of a simple shower,
dampening summer’s heat.
